But year-end planning should also include a review of something that can easily be overlooked: energy monitoring and data.

A full year of energy data can tell an important story about how a facility, building, or operation performed. It can help identify changes in consumption, uncover potential problems, establish benchmarks, and provide a stronger foundation for future energy decisions.

Before closing out the year, here are seven areas organizations should consider reviewing.

1. Review Your Energy Consumption Trends

Start by looking at energy consumption across the year rather than focusing only on the most recent utility bill.

How did consumption change month to month? Were there significant increases or decreases? Did seasonal changes align with expectations? Did equipment upgrades, operational changes, occupancy, or production levels have a noticeable effect?

Look for patterns as well as exceptions. An unexpected spike or gradual increase in consumption may be worth investigating, particularly if there was no corresponding change in operations.

The goal isn’t simply to determine how much energy was used. It’s to better understand when, where, and why consumption changed.

2. Make Sure You’re Collecting the Data You Actually Need

Energy monitoring requirements can change over time.

New equipment may have been installed. A facility may have expanded. Additional meters, inverters, batteries, sensors, or other devices may have been added. Reporting requirements may have changed.

Year-end is a good opportunity to ask whether your current data collection still reflects your operation.

Consider what information your facilities, operations, sustainability, finance, and management teams regularly need. Then determine whether that information is being captured reliably.

More data isn’t necessarily better. The right data is what matters.

3. Check Your Monitoring Equipment and Data Sources

Energy data is only useful when the systems collecting it are working properly.

Take time to review meters, current transformers (CTs), sensors, communication equipment, and other connected devices. Look for missing data, unusual readings, communication issues, or equipment that may require maintenance.

This is particularly important in systems that have grown over time. Changes to electrical infrastructure or connected equipment can create gaps that may not be immediately obvious.

Finding those issues before year-end reporting begins can save time later.

4. Look for Gaps in Your Data

A graph that looks normal at first glance can still contain missing information.

Review your historical data for periods where readings are missing, inconsistent, or unexpectedly flat. Determine whether communication interruptions, equipment changes, network issues, or other events may have affected data collection.

It’s also worth considering how data is stored and what happens if internet or network connectivity is interrupted.

Reliable historical data becomes increasingly valuable over time. Maintaining continuity today makes year-over-year comparisons much more useful in the future.

5. Review How Your Systems Are Connected

Modern energy environments rarely consist of a single device or system.

Facilities may be collecting information from electrical meters, solar inverters, batteries, building management systems, environmental sensors, submeters, and other equipment.

Before year-end, review how these systems communicate and whether important information is becoming isolated within individual platforms.

Ask questions such as:

Can data be accessed outside of the original system?

Are different devices able to communicate effectively?

Are APIs or standard communication protocols available when needed?

What happens to historical data if equipment or software changes?

Who controls access to the data?

Understanding these connections can make future equipment changes and system expansions significantly easier.

6. Establish Benchmarks for the Coming Year

Once you’ve reviewed the year’s data, use it to establish a baseline for the next one.

Benchmarks might include total energy consumption, peak demand, consumption by building or department, operating-hour usage, overnight loads, renewable energy production, or other measurements relevant to your organization.

The appropriate benchmark will depend on the facility and its goals.

The important part is creating a measurable starting point. Without a baseline, it can be difficult to determine whether future energy projects or operational changes are actually producing results.

7. Decide What You Want to Measure Differently Next Year

Finally, look ahead.

What questions did you struggle to answer this year?

Perhaps you could see total facility consumption but couldn’t determine which equipment was responsible for an increase. Maybe you lacked enough historical data to evaluate a project. Or perhaps retrieving information for a report required more manual work than expected.

Those challenges can help identify priorities for the coming year.

Consider whether additional submetering, sensors, automated reporting, integrations, or changes to data collection could provide a clearer picture in 2027.

Start the New Year With Better Energy Information

Year-end energy budgeting and forecasting doesn’t have to mean launching a major new project.

Sometimes the most valuable step is simply reviewing what you already have.

Look at your consumption. Check the quality of your data. Verify your equipment. Review how information moves between systems. Establish benchmarks. Identify what you want to understand better next year.

Energy data becomes more valuable when it provides continuity from one year to the next. Taking time to review your monitoring strategy before December 31 can help ensure that when the new year begins, you’re not starting over. You’re building on what you’ve already learned.

Contact Us | Learn More

<li style="color: #5e5e5e;
