At the same time, sourcing requirements, security policies, supply-chain concerns, and changing organizational standards can affect which hardware can be used within a system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In some cases, organizations have even had to disconnect existing equipment or add separate communication devices to maintain access to their data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, when evaluating an energy data acquisition system, it is worth looking beyond measurement capabilities. Here are several features that can help create a more adaptable system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Look for Hardware That Isn&#8217;t Tied to One Ecosystem<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A monitoring system should be able to work alongside equipment from different manufacturers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When data collection depends too heavily on a particular inverter, battery, or proprietary platform, changing one component can create problems throughout the system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, look for a solution that can act as an independent data acquisition layer. This makes it easier to change equipment without completely rethinking how energy data is collected and communicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Consider Where the Hardware Comes From<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Hardware sourcing is becoming an increasingly important consideration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before selecting a device, look at where it is designed and manufactured and where its components are sourced. Think About What Happens If Your System Changes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most important questions to ask before selecting hardware is simple:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What happens if another component in my system has to change?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you replace an inverter, change a battery system, introduce a new building management platform, or update equipment requirements, will you still be able to access and communicate your energy data?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Answer that question <strong>before you install the hardware.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Choose for Flexibility, Not Just Today&#8217;s Requirements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Energy monitoring hardware can remain in service for years, while the systems surrounding it may change several times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Choosing hardware that supports open communication protocols, provides multiple ways to access data, works across manufacturers, and meets current sourcing requirements can make it easier to adapt without rebuilding your monitoring infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Features such as Modbus client and server capabilities, API access, local data availability, and U.S.-designed and manufactured hardware without reliance on foreign components can all be important considerations when comparing energy data acquisition systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately, the goal isn&#8217;t simply to choose a device that works today.
